Christmas Scratch Regatta

Sixty members of the Club competed as 15 mixed crews at the Club Christmas Regatta on Sunday 21st December. The weather was cold but dry with a little wind and just enough bite in the air to make the bacon sandwiches cooked by Ross Dearsley and Paul Bond fly off the BBQ. Lauren Smoothy and a team of mums and dads ensured the bar served hot and cold drinks all morning and there were various cakes and biscuits to keep competitors and spectators going. Crews raced over 400 metres down the straight under the eyes of Richard Mattos, Steve Wright, Chao Yu and Rennie Chadwick, they demonstrated their watermanship skills by manoeuvring an aquajog judged by Mark Starling and Robert Hall and worked the ergos into a white heat by completing 2000 metres as a team watched over by Ian Pigram and David Stevenson. When all the times were in and added together the overall winners were a crew of Chris (from the adaptive squad), Steph Banks, Will Shepherd and Kirstin Davenport in 17 mins and 26 secs ahead of Oliver, Katie, Daniel and Laura who finished with a time of 18 mins and 6 secs. Full results are on the website. The Captain, Steve Wright, presented the medals to the top 4 placed crews. The mulled wine and mince pies all went and the event raised a significant amount of money for the development scheme – exact figure to follow.
