Summer season off to a great start

Racing in June for Guildford Rowing got underway locally at the Walton and Weybridge Regatta. Eight of the Women’s squad competed on Saturday, 8th June. The WMasC 4x- of Paula, Sophie, Jess and Jackie; came from a seven-second handicap in the semi-final to row through Henley RC and take the win. Fast forward to the final, where they had the same handicap, the crew beat Marlow RC for the win.

In the WMasD 2x competition, Tori and Jess beat Weybridge in the semi-final, but lost to a very strong Weybridge Ladies crew in the final.

There were also close races and valuable experience for Tori, Claudine, Rachel, and Helen in WMasC 4x- and for Jackie and Sophie in the WMasC 2x. A wonderful whole club day out; racing alongside our Junior and Men’s squads.

A trip to the Midlands the following weekend for the National Masters saw the WMas C4x- team face stiff competition, but they made it comfortably through to the final. The crew, composed of Paula, Hristina, Jess, and Jackie; had a quick start and kept a swift pace all down the course. They pushed the eventual winners hard and came away with a well-deserved silver medal.

The Guildford Adaptive squad headed to the Marlow Adaptive Regatta the same weekend as the National Masters. Chris Boyes came second in his single and his trophy was presented by Sir Steve Redgrave and Naomi Riches.

Our Learn to Row course was a huge success, predominantly due to the hard work of Helen Grey and the group of club members who volunteered their time to run the programme. Welcome to all the new rowers who have joined our development squad.

Having competed at the Marlow Regatta at Dorney Lake, and a glorious victory at Thames Valley Park Regatta, our J16 quad tackled Henley Royal Regatta. The last Sunday in June saw the J16 quad head to the GB16 selection for the annual Great Britain v France regatta. Lottie joined the quad in her pursuit of the WJ16 single spot at the same event.

The Club celebrated its annual BBQ party under beautiful conditions in Guildford. It was fantastic to see members from all the different squads attend to enjoy the summer party.
